OPINION

End of an era in
Kilmainham Gaol
Sunday, 25 October 2015 was a very sad day for Kilmainham Gaol as Liz Gillis retires after over 10 years as an Information Officer.
The last of the great guides, Liz had been instrumental in bringing about several changes to the tour of the Gaol in her time, including the inclusion of Tom Clarke and several women prisoners in the story.
An enthusiastic and knowledgeable historian, Liz always shared her information with the other guides to ensure that all could tell a more accurate and encompassing story of the Gaol's history.
Liz, of course, has written several books, all published by Mercier Press, including "The Fall of Dublin" and "Women of the Roevolution" and has at least another two "in the works" at present.  I had the pleasure of working with Liz from the start - we both joined within a month of one another - and can testify to her enthusiasm and professionalism over the 9 years we worked together.
Liz has left for RTE, to work on the national broadcaster's programmes for the centenary of the Easter Rising, something she is more than qualified to do.
RTE's gain is Kilmainham Gaol's loss, and she will be sorely missed by all who had the good fortune to go on one of her tours of the Gaol.
We wish her all the best in her new position, and hope to continue to work with her on several joint ventures she and Kilmainham Tales are undertaking.
